Bring on the Porn

I was in the car listening to the radio the other day on one of my many trips to and from the boyfriend’s house during the evil house moving phase and Grant Nash was going on about how Multichoice is thinking of bringing in a pay-per-view porn option for DStv. Now I seldom pay any attention to Grant Nash because he’s way too surfer dude on hash to engage my cerebral cortex in any way but I do remember thinking something along the line of oh it’s about time they did the whole pay-per-view thing here. And then I spent a few minutes wondering if perhaps they already do do it here and I just missed the memo…

Anyway, the topic came up on the Gareth Cliff show yesterday morning and a woman called in as irate as all hell about the porn thing and it made me wonder about my own views on it…

Her argument was pretty vague and she was a little more hysterical than she was convincing. There was something about not having this type of “depravity” accessible to children but that was completely irrelevant since I am quite sure that she didn’t get the idea of pay-per-view and the reality that you actually have to key in a pin to actually watch the porn. It’s not like your six-year-old is going to stumble upon it in an attempt to find the CBBees channel.

Now I know things like porn addictions have been responsible for breaking relationships and such – but she seemed to want to blame the porn industry for a whole array of criminal problems and I don’t quite get it. She then went on a supremely self-righteous rant about how sex within a marriage is sacred and joyous and special and not at all depraved blah blah blah (meanwhile I imagine that plenty of the type of “depravity” she is talking about is born within the framework of the marriage bed if you consider that the excitement of being with someone new has to be replaced with something new – especially for those marriages where love no longer factors at all.)

I just can’t seem to think anything other than for heaven’s sake it’s just porn! I mean really! So what? Surely enjoying a bit of porn now and then can’t be THAT bad? It seems to me that perhaps the guilt brought about by other people’s self-righteous bullshit is more dangerous than the actual porn itself. Sure it could possibly get out of hand – just like anything can – but a little indulgence now and then?

Her other argument was “you’re not a parent, Gareth, so you’ll never understand”. Somewhere in there was a speech about how he should just accept that he is wrong.

But – I’m a parent! It doesn’t bother me…

Does that make me a bad parent?

I’m not for a second saying here that I’m jumping for joy about my upcoming porn options (honestly I don’t even have DStv!) but I can’t imagine that the world is coming to an end just because there are a few people who might be…

And besides…as far as Multichoice is concerned…implementing the porn option is probably one hell of a good business move!

Funny enough I forgot I had written this post until just now when my friend Joyanne commented on my previous post with a similar theme.

i’m still not entirely sure how I feel about the subject because I am quite aware that a few odd experiences may completely cloud my judgement.

I don’t know…. I’m interested to know what other people think since it seems to be quite a heavy topic…

I don’t like porn, I don’t approve and do not advocate the watching/making of it. But it is out there and my opinions won’t stop them making it, selling it or airing it on TV. So if it will bring down the price of monthly subscriptions on DSTV and allow me to have DSTV so my son and I can watch National Geographic and Animal Planet and a few other channels we enjoy, then let them do it. As you say it is/will be “pay per view” so I’m not subsidising it and just perhaps they can subsidise me for a change.

I like that answer. Like I said – I’m not an ambassador for porn. I can’t tell you what I think.

If I were to presented with a porn movie now – for the first time – having never heard of porn before, perhaps I could say “this is how I feel about it”. But I can’t. Everything I think that I might think seems like an old cliche.

But I definitely don’t think Multichoice has any sort of “moral obligation” to the country as far as supplying or not supplying porn goes. And I definitely don’t think enjoying a bit of porn now and then makes you a twisted mess of a person.

So it turns out your readers are too scared to comment in case they’re labelled as “depraved”…

I say bring it on. If the kids are clever enough to steal your credit card, figure out the pin, find time alone with the TV and have the balls to actually act on these, then they deserve a little monkey spanking…

Chances are it’ll be too much effort for the limited attention span of today’s kids anyway.

I dont see any problem with two consenting adults (a couple) or a single person watching a bit of porn – as long as the porn is clearly made by consenting adults and doesnt include anything that would be termed illegal in most countries / states. Dont have the stomach to mention what those are!

Hey i don’t have DSTV have the dish the decoder the lot just cancelled it was a waste of money IMHO.

That said if there was pay per view i’d possibly get a pay per view option gives me the control and flexibility.

Porn is a reality if there is a scandal video released ill download it look at it …

Its a personal choice and no one can enforce there moral standards on another.

I don’t give a toss how many women JZ bangs hey if his getting some at his age kudos … he has more than one wife hell i could not work things out with one …

Porn made the internet what it is there is no denying this it was what started E. Commerce.

so please go get laid and hell it might even be better if you watch some porn and try something in it you may like it.

    Bring it on!!!

Oh yes South Africans need to fuck more and bitch less.

    Black man’s perspective…

Fuck it! Who gives a shit if someone has a few hundred bucks they can spare to watch some peoples do the nasty? It’s his money, his tv, his lounge and his life. South Africans should get laid more and bitch less. I’m tired of people thinking the world has to conform to whatever they think because they attach “moral value” to it. What the fuck is moral value these days anyway? Can anyone say there is a single meaning for that phrase in this day and age?

I disagree with kingtyrone though, if your kids are that smart and have the balls to take things that far, they deserve a cookie, because the only thing kids learn in school is how to be dumb with an education and this form of defiance would mean they beat the system.

Then I got a flash of JZ gettin busy in a dirty orgie with his her majesties and now I’m thinkin maybe porn isn’t such a good thing…

So again… Fuck it! I’ve got DSTV, and Lesotho is boring as hell because there’s no cinema in the entire country and the nightlife is not as sexy as the daylife which is about half as sexy as JZ’s least sexiest her majesty… I’m not sure how sexy that is, but I bet pay-per-view porn is a whole lot sexier… What options do I have?

    Bring it on!!!

    Black gay man’s perspective:

Exactly why does DSTV have a channel dedicated solely to something as banal as horse-racing, but can’t be bothered to introduce a channel for LGBTI programming?

Otherwise, I quite like porn, so I’m all for it. Just as long as they don’t air “2 Girls 1 Cup”. That shit was disgusting.

  11. Nayes says:

Dude…. My brother got hold of that thing and him, myself and my mom tried to watch it. the only one who made it through the whole video was my mom. I lasted about 10 seconds. That is just NASTY!!!

  12. John says:

There is pay-per-view already available to anyone with a DSTv decoder. No porn available though
