It’s not about skateboarding. I’ll tell you that straight away because that’s what I thought it would be about. That’s what the back cover lets you think. What the blurb on the back doesn’t let you think is that Slam is a book about teen pregnancy – so I’m telling you – it’s about teen pregnancy!
The best thing about this book is that I managed to find time o finish it! This happens rather rarely in the wolrd of being a mom. I adore Nick Hornby and I’ve loved all of his books so far – this one hit so ridiculously close to home though! And yes – I do realise just how absurd that sounds! I am quite aware that I had my baby when I was 26 – but my partner was only 22 – and he might as well have been a teenager! Hornby delivers the entire book in that I-know-exactly-what-you-mean way that I have to come love and expect from him. Every time I read something of his I feel like there’s a little piece of my own life in there (this time I especially loved the reference to Rufus Wainwright who I love!) Of course he’s added a little extra madness this time and there are a couple of scenes where a Tony Hawk poster whizzes the protagonist into the future – but hey – I’ll believe anything if you word it well!
You of all people should know that Hornby books are never about what they’re about.
Except About a Boy, which actually is about a boy.
