I wasn’t planning to share this chapter just yet. Or at all for that matter. Not until it was actually printed and bound nicely. The first 12 chapters were meant to be the only ones going on my blog. But I had a strange-ish thing happen to me the other day and it’s all rather relevent to this chapter, as well as chapter 4 pt.1 and chapter 4 pt. 2, though to a lesser degree since I was not working on these chapters at the time. Oh, and chapter 1 pt.1 and chapter 1 pt.2 are probably relevant too.
You don’t have to read all of it really. But it will help if you would like my next blog post to make a little bit more sense…

I wonder how many times I have to tell Fred to forget it before he actually does. I didn’t know that I needed the weekend off at the time, but you’d think I’d be allowed it simply for wanting it.
“It’s a late booking Fred. Say no. I’m not doing it. I have been looking forward to not doing it all weekend. Now shoo.” I limp wristedly flapped him away. It was a joke of course; I don’t in seriousness conduct myself in such a manner, but it got him all twisted up anyway. Fred is terrified of having men come on to him. more »

I must have startled Kaitlyn by knocking on her door because her face looked confused when she opened it to find me there. more »

I was sitting on the edge of my bed with my head in my hands trying to remember what it’s like to feel normal. For some reason my entire body felt like a fever about to break. And I swear I didn’t have the flu.
I’m married. It’s not supposed to make me anxious to see other women. My palms were not meant to be sweating, and I certainly wasn’t supposed to be experiencing the knotted stomach. My friend died, and yet I still had to keep reminding myself that I was going to a funeral and not a highschool reunion where everyone was expected to be something. All that was expected now is that we just be there. Nothing else. more »

It was after the fourth failed attempt to phone Josh again that I threw my cell at my living room wall, narrowly missing a painting given to me by Danny for my last birthday. Danny told me then that it reminded him of me: abstract and full of black and red with the occasional silver lining. Possibly it was a compliment, but I can’t imagine too many people taking it that way. more »
Home is a tiny two bedroom cottage on the courtyard side of my mother’s hotel. Mom moved out of it and into one of the ground floor rooms so that my daughter and I could have relatively private quarters. She insisted that the small bedroom with bathroom was perfect for her because she hated cleaning the kitchen. Periodically she eats with us, but most of the time she nibbles on something from the coffee shop, or she just doesn’t eat at all. more »

I don’t know what it’s like organizing a funeral in the cities. I assume it’s probably like it is on TV where you just give the funeral home a call and they pretty much take care of everything. Of course I assume it is generally so without the drama perpetrated by the entertainment industry. And I don’t think we do open caskets in South Africa, which is definitely far from being a bad thing if you ask me. more »

I have a child in my class whose name is also Sarah. We look so similar she could be mistaken for my own child more easily than her mothers. She has long silky black hair that she wears Alice-style with a ribbon. Even in winter she wears dresses over her long pants. She’s adorable and she’s genuinely sweet; sadly a rare combination amongst your regular screwed-up-by-parents-and-society twenty first century kids. more »

The boss was just as pissed off as I expected him to be when I finally got back to the office. more »
Maxine is without a doubt the strangest woman I know. She is beautiful but she’s not particularly aware of it. Her auburn curls got her teased as a little girl (that is until the boy discovered that she could punch harder than they could) but those same long tresses are now the object of envy to any woman and the object of desire to any man who comes in contact with her. She’s as tall, if not taller, than most men and she’s never been afraid to wear heels to increase her stature. She has dark green eyes that make you feel like she has an abundance of wisdom that she isn’t bothering to share with anyone. She oozes sexuality, but not in the come-and-get-it kind of way. It’s more like a don’t-bother-you-can’t-afford-me kind of way. I’m quite sure she doesn’t do it on purpose. But who knows? Maybe she knows exactly what she’s doing. more »
